Theodor Mommsen was one of the most brilliant classical historians of the nineteenth century. His most famous work is the multi-volume The History of Rome.
Theodor Mommsen was born in 1817 in the town of Garding, Schleswig. His father was a protestant minister.
He studied law and classics at the University of Kiel and had a short career in journalism before obtaining a professorship of law at the University of Leipzig.
Mommsen was dismissed from his position due to his participation in the 1848-49 revolution, but soon found a position at the University of Zürich, and eventually becoming chair of the Ancient History Department at the University of Berlin. He later also served as a parliamentarian in the Prussian Parliament.
Theodor Mommsen received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1902, a year before he died in 1903.
