Preface to Ulysses S. Grant’s Personal Memoirs
In setting up the preface to his personal memoirs, President Grant first states his reason for writing: He is out of money, and needs to be paid for his writing. It is hard to imagine now a former president on the verge of bankruptcy, but this has happened to several past presidents. In any regard, President Grant wrote his memoirs to be published for profit. The year is 1885 and Grant has been out of office for nearly a decade, but his fortune has been spent and is health is failing. The memoirs were to be published in two volumes.
Best,
Trev
