Harry Potter and the Bildungsroman Genre: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Chapter 5

"Diagon Alley"

Chapter five of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone serves the purpose of introducing Harry, and of course the reader, to the world of magic. The chapter also introduces a few new characters and begins action of the plot of the first novel through the introduction of the mysterious sorcerer's (Philosopher's) stone.

After standing up the Dursley's, Hagrid brings Harry to Diagon Alley to get school supplies, most of which Harry is unfamiliar. Harry and Hagrid then to to Gringot's Bank to pick up money from Harry's vault and for Hagrid to get the sorcerer's stone. Harry meets Professor Quirrell and Ollivander.

Chapter five sees a whole new world open up for Harry. The Dursley's can no longer suppress his individuality and he already seems more at home here than with the Dursley's, even though he is nervous about the new experiences and seems to have a foreboding feeling about Voldemort.
