Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar was one of the most important novelists in modern Turkish literature. He was also a professor of Turkish literature at Istanbul University.
Tanpınar was born in 1901.His mother died when he was thirteen. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar studied to be a veterinarian for a time, before switching to studying literature.
Tanpınar taught literature at various secondary schools before gaining a position in art history at Istanbul University in 1933, then contemporary Turkish literature in 1939. Tanpınar wrote several novels, poetry, stories and essays. He died in 1962. He is buried in Istanbul.
